First Ever DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals A Huge Success for Brockville

BROCKVILLE-Brockville was a very busy place on Saturday and Sunday as most of the DIRT Northeast racing world descended on it.  The first ever DIRTcar Northeast Fall Nationals were a huge success as crowds packed the Brockville Ontario Speedway for a two day festival of racing and fun.  The event also provided a nice boost to the local Brockville economy as visitors from near and far camped out in hotel rooms and enjoyed the beauty of the Thousand Islands.  They also enjoyed seeing Canadian drivers win all five events, that attracted almost 150 cars and teams.

Meanwhile on the track at the Beast of the East, things were just as entertaining as five different classes all put on a show to remember for the event.  Mario Clair dominated early in the 100 lap 358 Modified event on Sunday afternoon.  The Quebec driver was super fast on the high side of the race track but fell victim to lap traffic around the midway point and turned the top spot over to Dale Planck.  However, a restart with 23 to go was the ticket as the clear sailing up top enabled Clair to retake the lead en route to his biggest win of his career.  Planck's second place finish was enough to be declared 2009 358 Modified Super DIRT Series champion.  Kingston's Pat O Brien was the top local pilot with a solid fourth place finish after setting fast time in qualifying on Saturday.

The Super DIRT event for the Sportsman event took place on Saturday afternoon.  Former Brockville track champ and defending DIRT champion Chris Raabe once again mastered the Beast of the East.  After a gentle nudge to take over the lead from Brockville's Dylan Evoy in the early going.  Raabe dominated the remainder of the 50 lap distance for the win and almost guarantees the Napanee pilot a second straight title.  Justin Wright was second with Brockville's Matt Billings charging through the field from 16th starting spot for a third place finish.

The Pro Stocks also ran a 50 lapper as the final event of their series in 2009.  Joey Ladouceur of Alexandria came in second in the points and did everything he could to cop a title.  The ultra smooth driver led every lap and covered the field with relative ease in taking the win.  However, Pete Stefanski's third place finish was enough for the American driver to hold onto his lead and take the title.

The winning continued in the 25 lap Sprint car race that was run minus electricity thanks to a power outage that began just as the Sportsman were taking to the track on Saturday.  Glen Styres of Oshweken, Ontario managed to hold off a fast closing Steve Poirier in the closing laps to take a well deserved win.   The Riverside Bar and Grill King of the St. Lawrence championship for the sprints went to Bryan Howland on the basis of a fourth place finish just behind BOS fan favourite Jessica Zemken, who copped the win in the dash.  Brockville fans also raised over 1600 dollars over the two days for British Columbia native Travis Rutz.  The young Canadian was seriously injured in a nasty crash last month in Indiana.  Joyceville's April Wilson led the charge in the stands to help out her friend.

The 40 lap Street Stock event that many expected to be a marathon was instead a sprint race.  Just a couple of minor cautions in a quick and entertaining event won by Brockville track champ Steve Billings of Smith's Falls.  Billings had the car sideways a number of times in turn 4 but kept it straight enough to outdistance teammate Brock Cullen and Kevin Fetterly Jr.

Brockville Ontario Speedway would like to thank its fans, sponsors, teams and staff for such a great event.  Plans are already on the board complete with some lessons learned from the first kick at the can.  The Big Block Modifieds will join in on the fun in October 2010.  The Nationals also wraps up the 2009 season at the Beast of the East.  The first green flag waves in May 2010.  Fans can keep up to date at the track website at www.brockvillespeedway.com.
